Planning; The power of affects

By adjusting the sharpness, this alters the covers dynamics completely by presenting vibrancy, contrast and poise. This evidently shows that simple effects can be the most influential in creating positive developement.

Lighting

Another example in media of how brightness and contrast is used is in music videos. The Kooks are a band which my research suggests should attract my target audience. The different uses of lighting in this video was useful when applying different contrasts to my images and my cover.

Planning; Contents Page Background

When constructing my Contents page a vital part of my research is a relevant background image. I  therefore explored with colours and affects from my Front Cover to help produce not only a relevant contents page but present a flow in dynamics from page to page.

Planning; Further development and Exploration ( Draft 2)

Research; Constructive Critisicsm

In order to identify my progression I received feed back on my Front Cover by four members of my target audience, this is what they had to say ;

1
  • Very strong photo,
  • Good use of colour,
  • Good use of number in relation to 10
  • Artist name unclear (font)
  • Artist not facing the camera
  • Strong Masthead
  • More variation in relation to size of fonts

2

  • Good lighting
  • Artists name needs to be bigger
  • Include a barcode, date, price & add more coverlines
  • Good use of fonts on the page,
  • Good title-maybe make a point about it more

3
  • Photo dominates cover as its well lit and compliments style
  • Font colour in centre is not completely clear- slgithly obscurred
  • Slightly plain, more details- e.g barcode, price needed.
  • Colour scheme is good
4

  • Main image is well lit and suits the magazine
  • Good mix of fonts
  • Good design aspects and design touches
  • Hard to read the text surroundig "exclusive"
  • No barcode/ price

Planning; Important factors to consider when constructing my Front Cover

Research; How Contents Pages are presented

To understand how to present my Contents page with an edgy/exciting/ creative feel I looked at some existing Contents in contrast to my ideas.

This Contents page attracted my attention due to the creative aspects;  the scissor affects at the bottom of the page, variation of affects used on shapes and also the neat bold layout. The daring pink colour scheme supported by minor blue, black, yellow and red would seem to be too much for a contents page but due to the minimal use, this works succesfully. The font is challenging to read but the sizing is perfectly acurate in being reader friendly.

This Contents page attracted my attention due to the large amount of both images and text. The presentation of the page is not like a "typical" contents page which can be perceived as unique and different or just too busy. The large amount of imagery draws attention away from the main image and the title " Contents" is not eyecatching due to the size and lack of vibrancy of the yellow.

This Contents page attracted my attention due to the modern feel to the page. It follows a strict colour scheme of; orange white and black in which even the main image compliments. There is more space devoted to the images rather than the text which my research shows to be rare. The use of more imagery than text reaveals less to the reader about the content which I feel is a disadvantage.

Research; Double Page Context development

Research; Double Page spread context

Before writing my double page spread, I need to use the research on my target audience and magazine analysis to come up with a powerful realistic double page spread that is suitable for my audience.

Rough ideas

1 Mention an exsisting source of media that has promoted you and promote them. (Such as Annie Mac promoting Radio 1)

2 convey passion for music and style. ( A common trend that all the spreads follow)

3 Present stereotypical activities of a person who fits the genre. ( Uk Tribes )

4  Come across articulate yet intelligent. ( Magazine Research)

Planning; Front Cover Construction (Draft 1)

My first development proposed an issue, the use of 7 different fonts immediately suggested me going against my research. My research showed that most front covers use no more than 4 different fonts.

Research; Coverline Fonts Progression

Research; How Coverlines Are Used

Due to a struggle in identifying the amount of cover lines to use for my Cover due to lack of space, I did some further research. I looked at how current successful Music magazines adapt in having a powerful image and still use cover lines without making the cover look too busy.
This research has been beneficial in helping me identify that the minimal use of cover lines is successful if the there is edge and power in the content of them.

Research; Coverline Font ideas

In my initial stages of planning the front cover it is essential to explore different fonts and identify which compliment the cover the most. This is crucial as the power of fonts can either destroy the cover or compliment it. These fonts show some of my cover lines in different fonts which I think would suit my cover. my research shows that Black is the most powerful colour and that a serious of too many fonts would ruin the focus on my main image.

Planning; Double Page spread

To briefly explore my double page spread I applied the editing skills initially testing for my front cover to see if the predicted outcome was a success. The use of slight effect presents an edge to the images but the issue is contrasting the instense image with text.

Research; Exploring Photo Effects

After My Magazine research I could Identify that many of the cover images were edited or had a special effect;

By exploring editing effects to my front cover image this may help the image suite the red colour scheme chosen. This will also identify if any effects compliment the rest of the makeup to the front cover or if the image is better suited un-edited.

My research into Editing and Effects suggests that effects are more powerful for the contents page and double page spread. I will therefore use minimal effects on the Front cover.

Planning; Front Cover Colour Scheme/ Font

Colour Scheme is significant in reaching out the niche market. Before Inserting Coverlines it is important to understand what colours and Fonts not only compliment one another but also the theme and genre of the Magazine.

With my Title drafts fitting the red white and black colour dynamics this confirms that the colour scheme of my font will also fit the same scheme as I feel any other colours would be too full on and distracting for the eye.

In finding the exact shade I used the Eyedropper Tool, photo sampling ring on Photoshop CS4.

Research; Suitable Coverlines

Planning; Final Font Ideas

These two images depict a development and progression in discovering suitable fonts. This is evidence that planning helps mould the final outcome to fit the Genre/ Theme.

Planning; Title Exploration Development

Planning; Title exploration

To start the process of my Front cover I looked at previous research I had done of different Fonts and developed the appearance and structure of the initial ideas to build together a series of ideas to explore which fonts would compliment my Title.

Planning; Further development in finding a front cover

Research; Observing A Relevant Environment

To help develop my understanding of how a typical "Indie" environment is presented I went to a Ben Howard  Concert. This was beneficial as I could observe and listen to the suitable Genre of music for my Magazine as well as observe the viewers in the audience. The concert supported my current findings and research emphasizing its reliability.
